Things in Action

Tossing out a few Thing photos for your enjoyment. Remember you can click on the photo to see a larger version.

0) This is one of my favorite photos, so let me get this one out there first:

1)  Dale & Eva really know how to pack a Thing for a Rallye

2)  Things loaded on the ferry at Kelowna BC     Canada Rallye 2008.

3) Larry’s push rod came off in Pony, Montana

4)  Touring the National Bison Range in Montana 2008

5)  104,000 miles on this engine I built in 1992.  The push rod tubes started leaking so the engine was pulled and rebuilt.  Compression was 98 PSI all cylinders.

6)  New trans and new engine going in.

7. Cam burned in and ready for rallye.

8)  We CC all heads before installation.

9) Two spares.

10)  We use safety wire on all our cool tin.

11)  After-market heads with air flow restricted.

12) VW Factory heads with proper air flow.

13) Andrew torquing the heads.

14) Last pic……..It ain’t all fun and games.

15) Nope …..not a good idea to pass a Thing on a gravel road.

German Transaxle of America

For many years now anytime I needed a trans for a Thing restoration I’ve used GTA out of Bend, Oregon.

These are the two Thing transaxles I wanted rebuilt. Both had the AV trans code stamped on the bottom denoting the 4:12 ratio used in the VW Thing Type 181.

We dropped them off on Wednesday and they were ready for us the next day.

We have started a complete restoration on Sherry Mann’s Thing and she wanted to see if the transaxle could be painted to match.  As you see……GTA was happy to accommodate her wish.

Doug & Sherry had driven over to Bend with us and were able to see GTAs facility first hand.  These folks are pros and the quality of work is outstanding.  They took the time to visit with us and answer all our questions.

German Transaxle is the premier supplier of VW transaxles and the quality of their work is amazing.  I have had many Thing transaxles done by them and the results have been super.  Remember ….they are a wholesaler so ask your local shop to consider GTA when your need is a VW Unit.  They are located at
